South West Growth Summit 2017

The 2017 Growth Summit took place on the 20th October 2017. Attended by more than 300 delegates, the summit built on the momentum gained during the 2016 summit and the development of the South West Growth Charter.

The 2017 event was kicked off by Chris Loughlin, Chief Executive at Pennon. He was followed by Rain Newton-Smith, Chief Economist at the CBI who have the Keynote speech on the challenges facing the South West.

Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP, Richard Harrington MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy) and Rt Hon Robert Halfon MP addressed the South West Growth Summit 2017 in pre-recorded films

Steve Hindley CBE DL, Chairman of the Midas Group Ltd and the Heart of the South West LEP set out the aims for the day.

A panel on Environment and Place looked at how distinctiveness of place can drive economic growth. Panel speakers were:

  • Chris Loughlin – Chief Executive Officer, Pennon
  • Neil Parish – MP Tiverton and Honiton
  • Sara Uzzell – Board Member, Dorset LEP
  • Karl Tucker – Managing Director, Yeo Valley Farms (Production) Ltd
  • Esther Pearson – Director, South West Coast Path
  • Luke Pollard – MP Plymouth, Sutton and Devonport
This was followed by a Digital panel discussion on leveraging new technologies. Panel speakers were:
  • Tom Marks - Chair Vodafone South West
  • Toby Parkins - Director, Headforwards
  • Professor Anne Carlisle - Vice Chancellor, Falmouth University
  • Dave Underwood - Deputy Director of High Performance Computing Programme, Met Office
  • Stuart Brocklehurst Chief Executive, Applegate Marketplace
  • Geoffrey Cox - MP Torridge and West Devon

Gary Streeter, MP, covered aims of the day. Bill Martin, Editor of the Western Morning News, compered the day. The summit ended with a group pledge to back the South West.
